About the farm
A mere three kilometres from the centre of Maribor, on a small hill beneath the vineyards, lies the Horvat wine-growing tourist farm, where the method of growing and making wine with care has been preserved from one generation to the next.
The farm, with vineyards strewn across the hillocks of Počehova, produces a varied selection of wines. You can choose between Chardonnay, Pinot gris, Sauvignon, Yellow Muscatel, Traminer, Rhine Riesling and Riesling Italico as well as the red varieties of Zweigelt and the Blue Franconian. A good wine, of course, goes well with good food. Your hosts will serve you meat dipped in a minced lard and pork mixture (tünka), homemade dried meat products, homemade pâté, cheese spreads, etc. Sweets and pastry enthusiasts will love the taste of the potica cake and apple or cottage cheese strudel. The Horvat family organises tastings for their guests, business meetings with a visit to the wine cellar as well as special programmes by prior arrangement during St. Martin’s Day.
While parents indulge their taste buds, their children can play on the playground. The Horvat family is always happy to take their guests sightseeing through Maribor, where they are always sure to show them the oldest vine in the world, which grows on Lent. They take them to visit the Old Vine House (Hiša stare trte) and make sure that the guests truly see all that this, the second largest Slovenian city, has to offer.
